About THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING:

According to the guys at Fairfield Academy, there are two types of girls: the kind you hook up with, and the kind you're friends with. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Reed is the second type. And she hates it. With just one year left to change her rank, she devises a plan to become the first type by homecoming, and she sets her sights on the perfect date—Justin Carter, Fairfield Academy’s biggest hottie and most notorious player.

With 57 days until the dance, Aly launches Operation Sex Appeal and sheds her tomboy image. The only thing left is for Justin actually to notice her. Enter best friend Brandon Taylor, the school’s second biggest hottie, and now Aly’s pretend boyfriend. With his help, elevating from “funny friend” to “tempting vixen” is only a matter of time.

But when everything goes according to plan, the inevitable “break up” leaves their friendship in shambles, and Aly and Brandon with feelings they can’t explain. And the fake couple discovers pretending can sometimes cost you the one thing you never expected to want.

Review:

★★★★ 1/2 stars

I was entranced with this novel from the moment I read the blurb.  I've always loved stories where friends fall in love.  I knew it was going to be a book I enjoyed, but I didn't know how much. I wasn't expecting the course of love to be smooth, but this definitely had some bumps! This is my first book by Rachel Harris and I'm definitely impressed!

I really liked Aly.  She realized she wasn't happy with something and went about changing it.  Of course she didn't realize it would have consequences, but when we think of things we always think of the rewards, not what could go wrong.  I like how Aly was willing to roll with the changes in her plan. I really liked Brandon too.  He was a great friend and support to Aly.  She also supported him in return too.  I love that he wanted the best for her and was willing to put his friendship on the line for her. The only part I didn't like was how hurt they both were over what was happening to their changing feelings. If only they'd talked to each other, they could've avoided all the unnecessary angst! I even felt bad for Justin and he's a total player!

I read this book in a matter of hours, from start to end, and didn't put it down once.  I laughed, teared up, gripped my hair in frustration, and cheered on Aly and Brandon.  I love that both Aly and Brandon learned love was a risk worth taking for each other.  I'm so excited this is going to be a series!  I can't wait to see who Rachel Harris writes about next.
