“They killed me, but I survived.”

Three years after Rory Riordan foiled her own murder, she still trusts no one. Not Dr. Z, the eccentric college professor who has taken her under his wing, not Benji, the endearing, attractive classmate who insists on following her around, and certainly not Cy, the beautifully dark and mysterious boy who sits on the first row in Dr. Z’s Astrobiology class and asks far too many questions.

When Rory witnesses Cy being abducted by soldiers in the middle of the night, she finds herself submersed in a world that holds even more secrets than she could imagine--even darker secrets than her own.

From #1 New York Times Bestseller Jamie McGuire, experience the perfect combination of her bestselling books Providence & Beautiful Disaster. This New Adult Sci-Fi Romance is an action-packed, whiplash-inducing roller coaster ride. Page after page, this unpredictable, dark and sexy nail biter will keep readers guessing until the very end!

Review

★★★★★ stars

I haven't read a new adult paranormal story in a while.  In any event, I will now hold them to the standards that have been set by Apolonia.  Paranormal romances are a dime a dozen, but well written ones are far and few in between. Knowing Jamie McGuire has some serious storytelling skills, my doubts about Apolonia were minimal, but was I still skeptical.  I shouldn't have been.

The story is fast paced and grabbed me from the first page.  Rory is a fantastic narrator.  She's honest about what's going on in her head and what she's thinking.  You know her motivations for everything and how she views everyone as well.  I both loved her and feared for her.  She's already been so through so much and all of a sudden she's got all this drama/action going on in her life. I so wanted everything to be better for her.

Jamie did a wonderful job with keeping the story flowing at a fast and furious pace.  There was never a lull in the story.  In fact, I kept wondering what was going to happen next.  I loved all the action and suspense as much as the romance.  For the longest part of the book I had no idea who Rory was romantically inclined for.  It was like a triangle, but it wasn't and then it got more complicated with the arrival of another female.  All of the twists were surprises, some more than others. I really felt like I was on this intense journey I couldn't stop watching but didn't want to because I was afraid for everyone involved.  I guess because my emotions were engaged, I had no choice but to keep reading even when my heart was pounding loudly in my chest.  There are some light moments and some really heavy ones, but each one is integral to the story.

If you're a sci-fi/paranormal skeptic, I would highly recommend you read this book.  It'll help alleviate your fears and will entertain you as much as it did me. I can't help but wish it was longer and from other points of view as well.  I would have loved to know what was going on in Apolonia's head, or even Benji and Cyrus's for that matter.  Hopefully Jamie will continue to write in this world. I'm not ready to let go of any of them yet.  I'm always excited about Jamie's books and once again this has reinforced the fact her mind is amazing.  I'm already looking forward to her next book.
