Everything they have been through is nothing compared to what is coming...

Review

★★★★★ stars

I convinced myself reading Ruthless People had prepared me for The Untouchables, but I was wrong.  I thought I knew the characters and their motivations, but I quickly realized there was a lot more going on than what I thought and they showed.  Almost everything I had learned was a lie and things were quickly escalating to critical point which meant this book was crazy in a really good way.

I don't know why I was so surprised by everything that went down in this book.  It's 387 pages of pure mind effery.  Seriously.  I loved that the story was told from multiple points of view.  Almost every Callahan had a chance or multiple chances to allow us into their heads. There were some others who also told us what was going on.  Some people might find it overwhelming, but each chapter was clearly marked and I loved having all these different perspectives into what was going on both inside and outside the Callahan's lives.  There wasn't a slow moment in this book. It seemed liked something new was happening every other page, and one problem hadn't been solved before two new hurdles presented themselves.

Emotionally, I was all over the place.  There were certain characters I felt strongly about in a positive way and others I just wanted to shoot.  There were moments of dark humor which caused me to laugh and just as many moments when I wanted to cry or yell.  There were also a number of sweet romantic moments that were really touching.  I'm still in love with Mel and Liam.  I don't know if they're ever going to be able to just live their lives in peace.  If it's not somebody from outside the family giving them trouble, it's someone from the inside, and it seemed relentless.  There were some betrayals that rocked them and me, as well as revelations that did the same.

I sincerely believe J.J. McAvoy is a genius.  Both of the books in this series so far have been out of this world amazing.  They're so well written and even though you feel like the entire story is unfolding in front of your eyes, every reveal brings two new mysteries and crises with it.  The ending alone raised my blood pressure and got my adrenaline flowing.  I'm super excited the final book in this series, American Savages, will be released in March.  I've got to know what happens to the Callahans.  I know now that it's going to be a bloody, unpredictable, page turner, just like the previous books in the series. The stage is set for a showdown you're not going to want to miss!
