Synopsis

The tables have turned. Now I have the power—and it’s his turn to beg…

Everyone wants to be me.

Maybe it’s the sway of my skirt or the way I flip my hair, but I don’t care. Even though their attention is the last thing I crave, I just can’t stop. I dominate the track, the speed rattles my bones, and the wind and the crowd screams my name.

I’m her. The girl driver. The queen of the race. And I’m surviving—something he thought I’d never do.

They all talk about him. Did you see Jared Trent on T.V? What did you think of his last race, Tate? When is he coming back to town, Tate?

But I refuse to care too much. Because when Jared does come home, I won’t be here.

Tatum Brandt is gone. I’m someone new.

Review

★★★★★ stars

I've loved this series from the moment I read Bully.  While Tate immediately stole my heart with her guts and bravery, eventually Jared made space for himself as well.  He didn't come alone, bringing Madoc and Jax with him, and later Fallon and Juliet won me over too. It's amazing how real they are to me.  It's like they've become friends I love to visit with.  That's why the end of this series is bittersweet.

It's amazing how sometimes we can miss things.  When the news of Jared and Tate having another book was released, I didn't think too much of it because  I was just excited read about them again. Slowly news about what the book was going to be about began to filter out and rumors began to fly.  I realized I'd missed something integral to Jared and Tate's story.   I missed the part where Jared was unsure about what he wanted to do with his life, while he watched Tate know what she wanted to do with hers.  And I will admit to feeling sucker punched when the prologue was released and Tate and Jared went their separate ways. However, I knew it was for the best and that eventually everything would work out.  After all it was about the journey as much as it was about the final destination.

I think I loved Jared and Tate more in Aflame than I did Bully or Until You.  It's because they're older, more mature, and wiser.  They've lived apart for two years and grown as individuals. That doesn't mean they didn't stoop to their old tricks, but that they were better about being considerate of one another and the others in their vicinity. You could easily feel the pain and confusion the separation caused in both of them. I really liked how Penelope Douglas kept their separation realistic.  Neither of them wore chastity belts for the time they were apart, but nor did they sleep with anything with a pulse either. Their reunion wasn't easy either.  I completely understood Tate's pain at being abandoned by Jared. It would take more than him showing up and taunting her to let him back in easily.

Besides seeing Jared and Tate figure out their feelings about one another, they had to deal with changing family dynamics.  Jared had new things to work out with his mother and Madoc was giving him the cold shoulder.  Tate had to deal with things changing at home too. Speaking of family, I absolutely loved seeing Madoc, Fallon, Jax, and Juliet again. They really have become a family and I loved seeing them support both Jared and Tate, and each other.  Madoc made me laugh frequently. He certainly hasn't lost his touch.  I may have sniffed a little when all of the guys got together at the end, but you'll have tears in your eyes when you read that particular scene too. There were also moments when my heart beat was out of control. Especially when they were racing. Tate and Jared still can not resist a bet!

I think Penelope Douglas has done an amazing job at wrapping up this series. She's done justice to the entire gang.  Of course she has left a little window open in case she would like to visit the Fall Away gang or their progeny again.  I sincerely hope she does so, but I must admit to being overanxious to read her upcoming books. I've experienced love, heartbreak, hope, and so many more emotions from her words and I know the other stories she has to tell will affect me the same way.  I'm looking forward to experiencing all those feelings again with new characters!
