I still haven't been fully able to process this installment of the Indebted series, let alone the first one. Pepper Winters is a masterful story teller, taking you out of your environment and comfort zones and putting you into Jethro and Nila's shoes. I never know what turn the story is going to take, but I'm guaranteed to enjoy it.
One of my favorite things about this installment was Jethro. I really feel like I got to know him. He was such an enigma in Debt Inheritance and it was hard to see past what he'd done or would do to Nila. I'm still not on board with the idea of owning another human being, but it's clear to see Jethro is struggling with tradition and what he wants to do. I have high hopes for him after reading this part.
Nila is such a surprise. Her emotions seem to be all over the place, but her resolve is strong. I love how she's decided to fight and even though it seems she may weaken sometimes, she's still fighting. I was intrigued by her friendliness with Kestrel. She knows he comes off as harmless but then she knows he's sneaky too, so I was on edge for when he'd play his hand. I loved seeing her come into her own.
I read this book in what seems like no time. I couldn't stop reading and wondering what would happen next. I loved how I thought I knew what was coming and then had my feet knocked out from underneath me. The somewhat introduction of the Hawk's sister and some sharing of the history of where the debt originated has me on the edge of my seat. I have to know what will happen next, both in regards to the second debt and Nila and Jethro. My mind is so blown, it's spinning. I'm going to have this book and series on my mind for a long time.
