Synopsis

Elements of Chemistry: HEAT is part 2 of a 3 part series (65k word novel) and ends in a cliffhanger.

**Blurb contains spoilers if you haven’t read Elements of Chemistry: ATTRACTION**

Four days left. Private beach (…and boat). Not so invisible girl. And maybe less of a jerk-faced bully than originally thought. What’s the worst (or the best) that could happen? Kaitlyn is finding life outside of the science cabinet of obscurity to be quite illuminating …and so are her pants. When things heat up between Kaitlyn Parker and Martin—previously known as the jerk-faced bully—Sandeke, she places her trust in the one person she never thought capable of earning it, let alone keeping it safe. Fortunately or unfortunately for Kaitlyn, where she gives her trust she can’t help but also give her heart. But how will the world beyond the sanctuary of their newfound connection react to their relationship? Soon senators, chinless billionaires, and elements beyond Martin and Kaitlyn’s control want to weigh in on the young couple’s future. Navigating the chaotic inferno of new love might be more than Kaitlyn bargained for, and much, much more than her trust—or her heart—can handle.

“How long have you been up?” I scowled at him, willing my heart to calm and the brief spike of adrenaline to recede.
“For about five minutes. I was up when you knocked and I heard the door open.” He grinned down at me. His voice was deliciously roughened by sleep.
“Do you always grab girls and throw them on your bed when you wake up?”
“Only if that girl is Kaitlyn Parker.”
I appreciated that he’d just used my own line against me and I shook my head at his shenanigans. This seemed to make him happy because his eyes lit with menacing satisfaction.
But then the longer we stared at each other the thicker the air grew between us, and the more difficult it became for me to breathe. His gaze also changed and lit with a new flame, both ominous and hungry. I momentarily forgot why I was there and what my super genius idea had been. All I knew was that his look held the promise of something that was going to feel fantastic.
“I like you here,” he whispered, his eyes half lidded as they moved to my mouth, lingered there.
“You like me where?”
“In my bed. Being in my bed every morning should be one of your life rules.”
“Oh…” Every inhale felt painful, tight.
“All I can think about is touching you,” he said, lowering himself to kiss me.
It was the key phrase and it sparked my memory. I remembered why I was there. I remembered my super genius idea.
“Wait!” I said, turning my face to the side.
“Wait?”
“Yes, wait. I have an idea and it involves you not kissing me.”
“That sounds like a terrible idea.” He nuzzled my neck, licking my throat, using his hot breath to make me squirm.
“It also involves you letting me go.”
“Another terrible idea.”
“But it’s not. It’s really genius…oh!”

Review
 ★★★★★ stars

Boy did the flame hit the fire in this book, in more ways than one. Thankfully Heat picks up right where Attraction left off. The sucker punch I felt at the end of Attraction quickly eased and things were getting better between the two wonder kinds. Which was great until I realized the growth Kaitlyn and Martin had undergone was once again stymied but this time it might be for good. And I was sucker punched all over again and this time it was so much worse.

Let me back track because chances are your mouths are open with shock if you haven't read the book yet, but have started the series.  Here's the thing. Kaitlyn and Martin are both stubborn. I already know that, if you've read either or both books that are out, you know that. It's a given fact. Both of them have their own plans for the future and even differing ideas on how their "relationship" will play out. Seeing the two butt heads was interesting at first because it usually resulted in Kaitlyn playing her synonym game, but then things come to a head and all of a sudden they're facing major problems. Some of it is from internal conflict and the rest of it is from the outside world.

I never realized how different Kaitlyn and Martin were in the way they thought until I read Heat. Of course both of them have had vastly different childhoods and experiences. It shaped them both in ways that were difficult for them to overcome. They clash regarding what they want and what makes them happy and it's not pretty. There were other people around them who also influenced their actions and I didn't like them very much. This part of Kaitlyn and Martin's story really showed the impact their parents had on them. I'm trying to be nice but I really didn't like their parents much.  Especially the chinless and spineless wonder that was Martin's biological father.  That man is loathsome.

Of course I'm making it sound like this book was all strife and being stubborn, but it wasn't. Both Martin and Kaitlyn really invested themselves into what was happening between them. I loved seeing them laugh and realize they could be their true selves with one another. They were able to overcome many of the initial hurdles keeping them from being with each other. The chemistry between them was still as strong as it was in Attraction and I think it go even hotter in Heat. I love how the anticipation between them just continued to grow and grow and I was almost panting by the time they decided to do anything about it. There may have been a need to change underwear during this part. Hey, Martin might be a jerk face, but he can woo and he certainly delivers the goods.

One thing I absolutely loved about this book was the realism in it. Penny really did a great job at capturing the intimacy, awkwardness, and discomfort someone having sex for the first can feel; it wasn't all fireworks and wonderful. Kudos to her for keeping her books real, smart, and authentic. This is why Penny's book are like chips.  They're addictive and you can't stop with just one. I'm not sure whether to thank Penny or shake her for taking Kaitlyn and Martin's story and braking it up into parts. I love reading about them every few weeks, but the story is so amazing, I want to read it all at once and all right now. Capture can't come soon enough. With the way things ended between Kaitlyn and Martin in this book, it's going to be next to impossible to wait patiently to see if they can overcome this hurdle.  They're both so stubborn, maybe too stubborn. I can't wait to see how they overcome the new challenges that have been thrown their way. I have a feeling the resolution will be spectacular.

About Penny Reid
Author-Photo-Penny-Reid-300x300SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing). By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
