When Addison Hayes's world was turned upside down, she found herself spiraling into a darkness that not even her two best friends were aware of.
With the start of her senior year, Addie finds herself entangled in a twisted game with brothers, Chase and Chance Logan, which leaves her feeling lost and confused. But sometimes out of complete chaos arises a blindingly blessed insight.
That insight goes by the name of Jake Riley.
Jake doesn’t scare easily. No matter how hard Addie tries to push him away.
Will Addie lose herself in the darkness or will she be brave enough to set herself free?
Pink
“There’s no pink in this room,” he said, his expression almost comical and his eyes were filled with disbelief. “Girls usually like pink, right?”
“Not this girl,” I said, thinking about Kara’s obsession with the color pink. She loved it enough for the both of us.
He turned and tugged off one of his boots, and then removed the other. “So what do you like, Addie?” The bed shook a little as he scooted back and leaned against the headboard right beside of me. His hand covered mine, his fingertips brushing the back of my hand and making my pulse jump to life with his gentle caress.
I chewed on my lower lip and sneaked a peek at him. He was watching me, and I lowered my eyes focusing on his hand holding mine. “The usual,” I replied, and when I looked over at him he appeared thoughtful.
“That’s pretty vague,” he said, and lifted my hand from my lap to slide his fingers in between mine.
“Well, uh,” I stammered. Why was I so nervous now? Was it because of the bed? “I like simple things; old movies, photographs and music. I like gray and purple,” I blurted out, feeling silly and felt my face heat. I was such a dork.
He tugged on my hand and wrapped his other arm around my back to pull me against him. Warmth settled in the pit of my stomach. The feel of his chest against my cheek as I lay half draped across him made my mind buzz. This was a high that I had never felt before. Chance could be the one. His hand stroked my hair, his fingertips massaging my scalp and so help me, he made me yawn.
“Are you sleepy?” he asked, his body shifting down onto the bed, and his muscles clenched beneath my hands. He grabbed another pillow to shove behind him. His warm breath caressed my skin when he leaned forward, his lips brushed my cheek before he settled back against the pillows. “This is nice,” he said. I raised my head from his chest and gazed up at him. “I like spending time with you, Addie. I find myself liking it just a little too much.”
“That’s impossible,” I told him, and his lips quirked into a half-way smile. “You can never like something too much.”
“Says who?” He asked, his eyes studying my face.
“My sister,” I replied, thinking of the first time Nate had asked her out on a date. At the level of her excitement when she had come home that night singing his praises, I had told her that maybe she liked this guy just a little bit too much. Tears picked my eyes, and I felt Chance’s finger brush against my cheek. “Natalie always said when you love someone you love them with your whole heart. You don’t get to choose which bit or piece of yourself that you give away. You might end up with a broken heart, but at least you know that you gave it your all.”
“I think, I would have liked your sister,” Chance said, and a tear seeped from the corner of my eye trickling down my cheek at the kindness in his voice. He brushed it away. I smiled at him through my tears. “I think she would have liked you too,” I told him.
He grinned, leaned forward and I raised my head so he could press his lips against mine.
It was a gentle, sweet kiss.
