Title: Just Close Enough (Alabama Secrets Series #2)
Author: Elizabeth Marx
Mature NA Contemporary Romance
Synopsis
A man out for revenge…
When Alexander Volkow
raced into Crossroads, Alabama and bought up half of Broad Street, the entire
town questioned his motives, but he didn’t care. He did it for one reason and
only one reason — to find the man who went AWOL from the military with his brother,
Kon. Knowing Kon, something is terribly wrong, and Alex is set on retribution.
But when all roads lead to
the town’s favorite daughter, who just happens to be the missing man’s fiancée,
Alex can’t help but be mesmerized by her alluring southern charm and sexy
little snort.
A woman searching for a
way out...
No amount of bartending,
snake charming, or organic cotton growing can stop the fear blooming inside
Polly Anna Coots. She knows if her MIA fiancée is found alive, he’ll want to
follow through with their marriage plans, but she has had a change of heart —
and not just because of the new man she can’t get out of her head. If her
fiancée returns and she reneges on their future, she’ll end up DOA.
When one of Polly Anna’s
snakes runs Alex off the road, sparks fly, and the two embark on a steamy
collision course in a small town filled with secrets that add fuel to the
smoldering fire.
Can either one of them get
just close enough to acquire what they need from the other without falling in
love?
*Can be read as a stand
alone.*

Just Close Enough, in Five Words
Russian Playboy + Southern Tomboy = Fireworks
Just Close Enough, the Story Behind the Story
- No snakes, dogs, or horses were harmed in the writing of Just Close Enough because either Polly Anna or Alex could charm them into cooperation.
- Polly Anna Coots is based on the Polly Anna principal: someone who always sees the good in people, has a very optimistic POV, and who always puts a smile on other people’s faces. My Polly Anna isn’t a Southern Belle, she’s a Tomboy with Cherokee snake charming abilities. WARNING: She can handle a Russian playboy as easily as she handles a compact bow.
- Alex Volkow doesn’t trust anyone, ever, he’s broody, good looking and used to having everything he wants on his own terms until he meets Polly Anna. He’s a natural pessimist so Polly Anna’s optimism intrigues him because it’s genuine and foreign to him.
- Crossroads, Alabama is a fictional town based on the small town in Alabama where my mother was born, I used to visit there in the summers when I was a teenager.
- The real Miss Pearl delivered my mother at home, chewed tobacco, and was known throughout the Sand Mountain region for being a healer and all around wise woman.
- Either you’re born Southern or you marry Southern, otherwise you’re SOOL.
- Originally the title of Just Close Enough was Burned as both the hero and heroine had been ‘burned’ by others in the past, but as the story unfolded in became more about how you get just close enough to the thing that you desire without getting burned.
And here's another about favorite quotes!
Elizabeth's Favorite Quotes from the Just Close Enough
“Then all of a sudden we meet someone in the last place we expect. We can’t stop imagining them — wham — suddenly they’re all we think about, dream about, and out of nowhere our life starts revolving around this chance encounter.” Alex Volkow Just Close Enough
I like this quote because it’s a romantic way of recognizing love at first sight. It tells you that Alex only believes in it after the thunderstruck feeling hits him for the first time in his life and he feels it for the last person he should, Polly Anna. Isn’t the collision of two opposites what makes love at first sight so magical to experience?
“For some reason the grief that I heard in his voice made me feel sorry for him. There was a tiny part of me that was jealous because I imagined there was a world of difference in the way Alex loved — he was fierce about everything — I’d seen of him so far. It made me sad, though, because Billy wasn’t fierce, Billy turned out to be a bully.” Polly Anna Coots Just Close Enough
It’s easy to recognize the differences in the way another person loves because love is so demonstrative; actions always speak louder than words. Through Alex Polly Anna quickly realizes the difference between true yearning and just being someone’s possession.
“Definitely loved because there’s too much hunger in those lips for them to be pinning over someone else.” Alex Volkow Just Close Enough
I love this moment in the story when Alex identifies what’s missing in Polly Anna way before she’s ready to admit it to herself: she wants to be loved and cherished and she’s given up on Billy loving her long ago, her healing nature just doesn’t know how to let go of the dream of the man she wanted him to be.
“I’d played with fire before so I knew Alexander Volkow was a flamethrower on steroids.” Polly Anna Coots, Just Close Enough
Polly Anna understands that Alex is bossy and commandeering the minute she meets him, she’s had that kind of relationship before and she doesn’t want to deal with another man like that even if she is acutely attracted to him. She’s trying to distance herself and take a step away from the flamethrower before she gets burned.
“Sooka, if I find you alone, I won’t be responsible for what happens, but I guarantee you, we’ll both be naked and you’ll be under me before it’s over.” Alex Volkow Just Close Enough
When Alex says this he’s completely frustrated with Polly Anna and he’s ready to completely unfurl his entire sexual prowess on her, but he knows if he does he might scare her off for good. So like any good hunter, like the wolf that everyone refers to him as, he bides his time. Even though Alex is arrogant and determined he’s willing to sacrifice immediate gratification for something more awe inspiring later.
“Lordy, lordy he was making me hotter than a habanero in a hot sauce factory.” Polly Anna Coots Just Close Enough
This quote shows Polly Anna’s comical inner mind. She knows she’s incapable of fighting the desire she feels for Alex but she tries to continue to fight it.
“Trust me, you’re perfect. Perfect for me — the light against my darkness,” he murmured as his lips descended on my scarred arm, before they met my lips for a deep kiss. Alex Volkow Just Close Enough
This quote shows the transformation of Alex from powerful Russian playboy looking for revenge to acceptance of this overwhelming attraction that’s completely out of his control.
“Your sense of ownership is more powerful, it’s the selfless kind of possession that would risk anything to protect what’s his. Billy’s way is violence, signifying nothing.” Polly Anna Coots Just Close Enough
This quote is important because on one level Billy and Alex are very much the same kind of determined men, men who are man enough to take what they want, but Polly Anna realizes that it’s the fine balance of intention that separates these two Alpha males. Alex always considers her feelings, even when he keeps her in the dark, his intentions are always pure and come from a place of devotion and love while Billy is a takes what he wants, just because he wants it and he keeps taking until there is nothing left.
“If you’re lucky enough to find the one love, the true love, the forever love you can’t quite place when it began because it’s like it was always there, it’s as if everything you’ve done in your life led you to the person who changes the whole direction of your world. She’s a part of every breath you take. You keep her close and you never let go, no matter how hard she tries to dissuade you.” Alex Volkow Just Close Enough
This is my absolute favorite line in the book and sums up Alex’s entire journey in Just Close Enough.
